Spiritual Disciplines: Community

Freshwater Staff   -

We concluded our series on the Spiritual Disciplines with a call to community. Pastor Jake began the message last Sunday by discussing the pervasive loneliness that plagues our modern world, and how our culture’s emphasis on individualism and independence can leave us feeling isolated and disconnected.

In contrast, we see from the very beginning of the Bible that God created us for relationship. In fact, in Genesis 2:18, God says, “It is not good that the man should be alone.”

We are meant to live in community with others, and by engaging in the spiritual discipline of Christian community, we can combat the deforming influences of our culture.

Jake discussed three hindrances to Christian community – individualism, tribalism and unforgiveness – and encouraged us to overcome these barriers by seeking authentic connection with others. When we invest in relationships, practice hospitality and forgive those who have wronged us, we can experience the fullness of life that God intends for us.

Ultimately, Christian community offers a powerful antidote to loneliness. By embracing this discipline, we can break free from isolation and experience the joy, love and support that comes from being part of a vibrant and caring community.
