Little Letters: Titus, Chapter 3

Freshwater Staff   -

Last Sunday, Pastor Sean continued our “Little Letters” summer series by wrapping up Paul’s letter to Titus. We’ve been examining how faith shapes our identity and how we disciple others. In Titus 3, we see how this translates into action in our daily lives.

Titus focuses on building a strong Christian community. This involves establishing good leadership, fostering healthy families and ensuring the message of the Gospel remains clear. One challenge we face is prioritizing God when other things compete for our attention. That’s where submission comes in. Paul emphasizes submitting to faith leaders, within families, and to those in authority.

This last point can be a sticking point. What if our leaders aren’t ideal? The answer lies in remembering that all authority comes from God (Romans 13:1-7). We are called to pray for our leaders and act with respect, even if we disagree (1 Timothy 2:1-4).

However, Sean pointed out that there’s a caveat. Our primary obedience belongs to God. Acts 5:25-29 shows us how the apostles prioritized God’s will over human authority. While we strive for a Christ-like attitude, there may be times when following God’s commands leads to consequences.

In Titus 3, Paul reminds us that many of us were once “foolish, disobedient, and enslaved by various passions” (Titus 3:3). The same can be true of those in authority. We’re called to be different, reflecting Christ’s love and setting an example for others (Titus 3:4-8).

This means avoiding negativity and arguments that distract from our mission (Titus 3:9-11). Our focus should be on good works and sharing the Gospel (Titus 3:8-11). Following Jesus isn’t always easy. There will be times when it requires sacrifice and a different perspective. But by prioritizing God and living out our faith, we can become a light in our world (Titus 3:14-15).

Reflection Questions
  1. Reflecting on Submission: Think about an area in your life where submission can be a challenge. How can you approach this situation with a Christ-like attitude, even if it requires sacrifice?
  2. Examining Your Focus: Are there distractions or arguments that keep you from sharing the Gospel or doing good works? How can you refocus your energy on being more Christlike?
  3. Eternal Perspective: Sometimes following God’s will can lead to earthly consequences. Think about a situation where you might have to choose between obedience to God and obedience to human authority. How can you maintain a perspective focused on eternity?
  4. Discerning True Needs: Our world is filled with needs, both real and perceived. How can you discern the most pressing needs and use your resources (time, talent, treasure) to make a difference for God’s Kingdom?
  5. Personal Transformation: Titus is a letter about putting faith into action. Think about one area of your life where you can grow in your faith. What steps can you take to become more Christlike in this area?
